Greece has just been named the world’s top honeymoon destination for 2027. Virtuoso’s 2027 Luxe Report, a survey of more than 3,100 luxury travel advisors in over 50 countries, puts Greece first, ahead of Bali, the Maldives and Italy. And when couples picture a Greek honeymoon, most of them picture Santorini.
So is a Santorini honeymoon still worth it, with all the talk of crowds and high prices? We live and work here, and our answer is yes. You do have to plan it the right way, though. This guide covers when to come, where to stay, what it really costs, and the experiences that make it feel like a honeymoon rather than a sightseeing trip.
Is Santorini Still a Good Honeymoon Destination in 2027?
Yes. And the people who plan luxury trips for a living agree.
Here is what the 2027 Virtuoso Luxe Report found:
- Greece is the No. 1 honeymoon destination for 2027. That’s up from No. 2 behind Italy in the 2026 edition. The full top five is Greece, Bali, the Maldives, Italy and French Polynesia.
- Greece is also No. 4 among all luxury destinations, behind Japan, Italy and France.
- Honeymoons are now the No. 6 reason affluent travelers take a trip, up from No. 8 a year earlier. “Celebrating a milestone” is No. 1.
- The Greek Isles are the No. 3 cruising itinerary in the world, and “food, wine and high-end spirits travel” made the top 10 trends.
- Couples want value, not just luxury. Advisors reported that “value and safety have become increasingly important considerations” in where and how people travel.
That last point matters for Santorini. Its reputation is “beautiful but expensive and crowded,” and some advisors now steer couples to quieter islands. In Euronews’ coverage of the report, one Virtuoso-affiliated advisor said honeymooners are moving toward Paros, Milos and Crete, and that the agency is booking more honeymoons in April, May, October and November.
We’d put it differently. The crowds in Santorini are real, but they gather in a few places at a few times of day: Oia at sunset, Fira when the cruise ships are in, and the peak weeks of July and August. Plan around those three and you get the island the photos promise. The caldera, the volcanic wines, the sunsets over the sea and the whitewashed villages don’t exist anywhere else in Greece. Santorini also rewards the things Virtuoso’s advisors say couples want right now: privacy, food and wine, and time on the water.

When to Go: The Best Months for a Santorini Honeymoon

The sweet spots are late April to early June and mid-September to late October. The weather is warm, the sea is swimmable from late May, everything is open, and prices sit below the July and August peak. If we had to pick one month for a honeymoon, it would be September: the sea is at its warmest and the light is at its best.
| Season | What it’s like for couples | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| April to early June | Mild, green, quiet; wineries reopen; sea still cool in April | Great value and space. Best for walking and wine |
| July and August | Hottest, busiest, most expensive | Possible, but book everything private and early |
| September to October | Warm sea, golden light, crowds thinning | Our favorite honeymoon window |
| November to March | Quiet and local; some hotels and boats closed | Only for couples who want the island to themselves |
Two more tips:
- Check the cruise ship schedule. Fira and Oia feel very different on a day with several ships in port. Our cruise and bus timetables help you plan your busiest sightseeing for quieter days.
- Read our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Santorini if your wedding date is fixed and you want to know what to expect.
Where to Stay: Choosing the Right Village
Where you sleep shapes the whole honeymoon more than any single booking.
- Oia. The famous sunsets and the most photographed hotels. It’s also the busiest village every evening. Stay here if the caldera-view suite is the dream, and then watch the sunset from your own terrace, not the castle.
- Imerovigli and Firostefani. The same caldera views, a short walk from Fira, and much calmer evenings. Our first pick for most honeymooners.
- Fira. The most restaurants, bars and transport links. Convenient, but lively at night.
- Pyrgos and Megalochori. Traditional inland villages with vineyards around them. No caldera edge, so rooms usually cost noticeably less, and the sunset from Pyrgos’s hilltop is one of the island’s best-kept secrets.
- Kamari and Perissa. Black-sand beach towns on the east coast. The most affordable base, and good for couples who want swims and easy dinners.
A smart split: spend most nights in a village like Pyrgos, Megalochori or Imerovigli, then book one or two “splurge” nights in a caldera suite at the end. You get the honeymoon photos and the hot tub at sunset without paying caldera prices for a full week.
What Does a Santorini Honeymoon Cost? (And How to Keep It Reasonable)

A Santorini honeymoon can cost a few thousand dollars or several times that. The difference is mostly down to three things: the month you travel, how many nights you spend on the caldera edge, and how you spend your days.
Where the money goes:
- Accommodation is the biggest line. Caldera-view suites in peak season sit at the top of the market; inland villages and beach towns cost far less. Shoulder season lowers prices across the board.
- Experiences are where couples get the most for their money. Our private tours are priced for the whole group, so the “from” price on a tour page is the per-person price for a larger party. For two people the price per person is higher, because the car, the driver and the sommelier are there just for you. Here is what a couple pays on a few of our tours:
- A private 3-hour mini wine tour (2 wineries, 8 tastings): from €400 for two.
- The private sunset wine tour (3 wineries, caldera views): from €560 for two.
- The semi-private sunset sailing cruise (six hours, shared boat, priced per seat): from €350 for two.
- Food can be as simple or as grand as you like. A seaside taverna lunch costs a fraction of a caldera-terrace tasting menu, and often tastes better.
How to keep it reasonable without it feeling like a budget trip:
- Travel in May, June, September or October. You get the same island for less.
- Split your stay between a village and one or two caldera nights, as above.
- Pick one “big” experience and a few small ones. One private sunset sail or helicopter flight, plus a winery afternoon and a free caldera walk, feels more special than a packed schedule.
- Go private where it counts. A private tour for two costs more per person than a shared one, but the whole experience is built around you. Choose the one or two moments that matter most to you and keep those private (our wine tour cost guide explains how private pricing works).
- Use the free things. The caldera walk from Fira to Oia, a sunset from Pyrgos, an afternoon on a black-sand beach. Some of the best moments on the island cost nothing.

The Most Romantic Things to Do in Santorini as a Couple
Watch the sunset somewhere other than Oia castle
The Oia sunset is famous for a reason, but it comes with a crowd. You can watch the same sun drop into the caldera from a winery terrace with a glass of Assyrtiko in hand. Our private sunset wine tour visits three wineries and ends with the caldera view. Our sunset wine tour guide explains the timing month by month.
Sail the caldera together

Seeing the cliffs from the water is the moment most couples remember. Our cruises leave from Ammoudi Bay and sail to the warm volcanic springs and to beaches no road reaches, like Red and White Beach, with a meal and drinks on board. For a honeymoon, a private sunset sailing cruise means the boat is yours alone. If you’d rather share the cost, the semi-private sunset cruise keeps the group small. Our catamaran and sailing guide compares the options.
Taste the island’s wine
Santorini’s vines grow in volcanic soil, trained low into basket shapes against the wind, and the island has been making wine for more than 3,000 years. A winery afternoon is relaxed, beautiful and very Santorini. A private daytime wine tour visits three estates with a certified sommelier. Not sure where to start? Read how to choose a Santorini wine tour.
Have dinner by the water at Ammoudi Bay
Below Oia, a long staircase leads down to a tiny harbor of fish tavernas on the water. It’s one of the most romantic dinners on the island, if you time it right. Our Ammoudi Bay guide explains how. Or let us take you there on a private island tour with lunch or dinner at Ammoudi Bay.
Book a flying dress photoshoot

The long, flowing dress against the caldera is a Santorini signature for a reason, and the photos become the album you’ll keep. Our private flying dress photoshoot takes about an hour.
Cook a Greek dinner together
A private cooking class with wine tasting is a fun, hands-on afternoon: you cook with a local chef, then sit down to eat what you made with wines poured alongside. Read more in our cooking class guide.
See the caldera from above
For a once-in-a-lifetime moment, our helicopter, sightseeing and wine tour combines a scenic flight with time on the ground and a tasting. Here’s what you see from the air.
Walk the caldera from Fira to Oia
This 12.5 km (7.7 mile) trail along the cliff edge takes about 3 to 5 hours and costs nothing. Start early to beat the heat, or set off in the late afternoon and arrive in Oia for sunset. Our Fira to Oia hike guide has the details.
A 3-Day Santorini Honeymoon Itinerary
Most visitors spend about three days in Santorini, so this plan fits the moments that matter into three relaxed days.
Day 1: Arrive, unwind and toast the sunset. Check in and take it slow: a swim, a rest, a short stroll through your village. In the late afternoon, join a private sunset wine tour. We pick you up from your hotel, take you to three wineries, and end your first day with a glass of local wine as the sun sets over the caldera. Finish with a late dinner in Fira or Imerovigli.
Day 2: A day on the water. Spend the day on a private sailing cruise with swims at the volcanic beaches, or take the private sunset cruise and keep the morning for the beach.
Day 3: Villages and a long dinner. Explore Pyrgos and Megalochori in the morning, or walk part of the Fira to Oia trail. Book a flying dress photoshoot for the golden hour, then take the steps down to Ammoudi Bay for a fish dinner by the water.
More time? Add a cooking class, a beach day in Kamari or Perissa, or a helicopter flight. If you’re still deciding on length, here’s how many days in Santorini is enough.
Beyond Santorini: Extending Your Greek Honeymoon

Virtuoso’s Misty Belles told Euronews the results point to strong demand for destinations that combine romance with culture and cuisine. A European honeymoon is also often longer than a week, which makes it easy to add a second stop. Santorini pairs beautifully with the rest of Greece:
- Athens and Crete. Spend a couple of days among the ancient sites in Athens, then finish on Crete for food and wine. Here’s how we’d combine Athens, Crete and Santorini.
- A private yacht through the islands. For couples who want the ultimate in privacy, a crewed yacht or catamaran charter lets you wake up in a different cove each morning. We now offer luxury yacht charters across Greece through a new sailing partner, and we’re happy to help you plan a route that starts or ends in Santorini.
- Santorini vs Mykonos? Many couples weigh the two. Our Santorini vs Mykonos comparison helps you decide, or combine them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Santorini good for a honeymoon?
Yes. Greece is the No. 1 honeymoon destination for 2027 in Virtuoso’s Luxe Report, and Santorini is its most romantic island. Plan around the crowds by staying outside Oia, traveling in spring or fall, and watching the sunset away from the castle.
What is the best month for a honeymoon in Santorini?
September is our favorite: the sea is warm, the light is golden and the crowds are thinning. Late April to early June and the rest of October are also excellent and usually cost less than July and August.
How many days do you need for a Santorini honeymoon?
Three days covers the highlights: a sunset wine tour, a day on the water and the villages. Most visitors stay about three days. Add a day or two if you want slower mornings and beach time, or combine Santorini with Athens, Crete or another island for a longer trip.
Can you do a Santorini honeymoon on a budget?
Yes. Travel in the shoulder season, stay in a village like Pyrgos, Megalochori or Kamari with one or two caldera nights at the end, and choose one big experience plus a few free ones, such as the Fira to Oia walk.
Where should honeymooners stay in Santorini?
Imerovigli and Firostefani give you caldera views with calmer evenings than Oia. For better value, stay in Pyrgos or Megalochori, or on the beach in Kamari.
What is the most romantic thing to do in Santorini?
For most couples, a private sunset: on a sailing cruise, or on a winery terrace with a glass of local wine. A sunset dinner at Ammoudi Bay comes close.
