What is Akrotiri — The Pompeii of the Aegean?
Around 1600 BC, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history devastated the island of Santorini — then known as Thera — collapsing its centre and burying the thriving Minoan settlement of Akrotiri under metres of volcanic ash and pumice.
Unlike Pompeii, where the eruption killed thousands, the people of Akrotiri appear to have evacuated before the explosion, leaving the city eerily empty but remarkably intact. Buildings of up to three storeys, sophisticated drainage and sewage systems, extensive frescoes, pottery, and furniture were all preserved in extraordinary condition beneath the debris.
Excavations began in 1967 under archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos and have continued ever since, revealing a settlement of exceptional sophistication — one that challenges many assumptions about the limits of Bronze Age civilization. The site is now covered by a climate-controlled protective structure that allows visitors to walk through the ancient streets and view the buildings largely as they were found.
